Construction update

Photos and Discussion of the old Navarre Beach Holiday Inn Hotel, and planned construction of another Hotel planned for the existing site destroyed by Hurricane Ivan on September 2004 and Hurricane Dennis on 2005. Info about the 1978 movie Jaws 2, which much of the film was filmed at Navarre Beach in the 1970’s. The actors and crew used the old Holiday Inn as their headquarters.

Is there any new information on this project? We will be visiting hopefully in June of this year, and would love to see the ground broken by then on that site. Like the condos alot, but there is something about a hotel that offers room service, a pool, bar, etc.

Have read heard in a couple of places. Here is what was in the March 16th issue of Navarre Press. (I subscribe, so believe I can quote with attribution.). I think where they say "test pylons" they mean "test pilings", for the foundation?
New 7-story hotel on horizon

Construction is set to begin on a 161-room Gulf front hotel on the site of the former Holiday Inn on Navarre Beach, which was torn down in 2005 after damage from Hurricane Ivan. Property owners recently submitted site and foundation plans to Santa Rosa County.

“It’s very exciting, and there’s progress toward construction,” said Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Jim Melvin, who has been meeting with the hotel’s developer, Holi Corp, which also owns Margaritaville on Pensacola Beach and Crowne Plaza in downtown Pensacola. “It’s my understanding there may be test pylons soon," added Melvin, who said the hotel will have many amenities plus conference capabilities.

The hotel is planned to have a ground level with six additional stories above. The facility is planned to feature a Gulf side full-service restaurant, nearly 2,000 square foot of meeting space.

There will be two pools, an indoor pool on the second level and outdoor pool with a lazy river, which has a slow current similar to a river.

A parking lot is planned on the north side of the building along Gulf Boulevard.

The county has assigned staff to assist the developer with navigating county processes and anticipating the next steps to keep the project moving.

Construction is expected to begin soon, and the hotel is expected to open by the 2015 summer season.

In October, Sharon Hess, owner of Holi Corp, asked commissioners to forgive a $2.9 million in past due property taxes owed on the parcel, but the county was restricted from fulfilling the request.

However, the board did approve transfer of $355,166 from economic development reserves to reinstate utility taps and directed the County Attorney to draft an amended and restated lease, extending the terms and lease fees. Hess has stated the project will provide a $20-30 million economic impact to the area with sustained employment for 75 people. Hess also forecasts a 20-percent increase in overall county bed tax collections.
The "county assigned staff to assist the developer with navigating county processes and anticipating the next steps to keep the project moving" could be important - as rumor is that part of the delays in getting the Pier amenities completed are those very same "county processes" (permits and inspections, etc.) required by the county?
Cheers, Pete
