Hotel re-zoning.....

Photos and Discussion of the old Navarre Beach Holiday Inn Hotel, and planned construction of another Hotel planned for the existing site destroyed by Hurricane Ivan on September 2004 and Hurricane Dennis on 2005. Info about the 1978 movie Jaws 2, which much of the film was filmed at Navarre Beach in the 1970’s. The actors and crew used the old Holiday Inn as their headquarters.

Because it's one block along from "our" place this caught my attention.

The NWFL Daily News is today reporting this about the Holiday Inn site on the Beach:

"Santa Rosa County commissioners will be asked at their meeting Feb. 28 to approve a zoning change for the 18-acre parcel on the Gulf of Mexico where the Holiday Inn once stood."

All in preparation for ground breaking on the new Hotel "Before 2014".

NAVARRE BEACH — The possibility of a new beachfront hotel is getting closer to reality.

Santa Rosa County commissioners will be asked at their meeting Feb. 28 to approve a zoning change for the 18-acre parcel on the Gulf of Mexico where the Holiday Inn once stood.

The county’s planning board agreed last week to recommend that the commission approve the entire parcel as a “hotel zoning district.”

Hurricane Ivan destroyed the Holiday Inn in 2004. At the time, two-thirds of the parcel was zoned for a hotel and one-third was zoned high-density residential, according to Beckie Kato, the county’s planning director.

After the hotel was destroyed, the parcel was left without a zoning classification under the current land development code, she said.

If commissioners approve the zoning change, the developer would be required to build a hotel first and then add related businesses such as shops or restaurants.

The initial proposal had been to designate the parcel for commercial zoning, but residents opposed that. Kato said there was no opposition to the hotel zoning district designation.

County Commissioner Jim Melvin said Marilyn Hess, who owns the lease for the property, has told him she intends to start developing a hotel as soon as she finishes renovating the Holiday Inn in Destin.

“We’re next after she finishes Destin,” Melvin said. “She will break ground before 2014 gets here.

“It’s going to be a real shot in the arm for Navarre.”

Well, that is good news. I hope and pray the economy holds up/out to warrant building a new hotel. Secondly, if it does and they do, it would be nice to see some of the old resurrected in the new. I sure miss that hotel. Heck, I liked just hanging out in there.

Frankly, we could have done with the hotel being there TODAY!

We are leaving for Navarre this evening but would have left for the place yesterday or even Sunday if we could have stayed on the beach while the flooring and clean up guys were doing their jobs - says it all from my perspective really.

Good News. Git-er-done while long term interest rates are still low. 8 years without a quality hotel, indoor swimming pool and a good family restaurant on NB is way too long. :D

I hope this does not hijack the thread but for those of us who spent some time there.....recollect to being there and ask yourself, could you have ever suspected our country especially and the world would be in the shape it is in?

Negatory. But then I was only 11 or 12 the last time I stayed at the old Holidome

I remember the 60's on P-beach, Vietnam and a sometimes a lot more. I remember in the late 70's when I had a constuction loan of 19% interest and a mortgage loan at 13.5%. There are a lot of folks in the USA that have been holding cash and looking to invest for the last few years. C of D rates at 1% and inflation at 3% do not make anyone money.

If I were younger I would be buying property on NB. Prices on lots are as low as they were in the early 90's. Housing prices from the lows are beginning to stabilize and moving up. Property is selling but less than 05 and 06 prices.

I commend the Holi Corp folks for wanting to rebuild a hotel on that choice beachfront property. I have never seen it in my lifetime when interest rates were this low, the stock market this high, and commodity prices as high as they are now.

Cheer up folks. Come to NB Paradise, kick back and enjoy. Compared to a few years ago the sun is coming up brighter, the sand is sugar white, the water is beautiful and things on NB looking good 8)

I support private enterprise and hope the Holidome rebuilds soon. Also I hope the Baraccudas location and the Palms of Navarre LLC. (Cocadries) reopens and many of the condo's, town houses and single family houses that were destroyed in 04 and 05 rebuild soon.

Perhaps Dolly Parton should come to NB. We need more private owned propety not SRC picking up crumbs and renting it out cheap.

Noooooo, Navarrebeacher......no Dolly. Sweet, wonderful, kind lady for sure (I have heard that from a few venue Manager's, who interact with her) but she may come to Navarre Beach and want to put up some type of park...e.g., Gulf Coast version of Dollywood.

The interests rates may be excellent but until such time there is confidence in the economy (which will NOT be under this demon or the next if this country makes the same mistake), jobs are secure, banks are readily lending, people are making money and this country becomes prosperous again, I do not see a real estate boom or people buying, by any means. Nothing will change until the overall, underlying position of the country changes and that, based on the past 5-7 years and especially under this President, is not going to happen.

Low interest rates are useless unless people have the cash (and cash flow) to take advantage of them. The stupid Fed keeps printing money and artificially inflating the markets (and that bubble will burst someday). And the lamestream media keep telling everyone how good everything is...grr...now I'm ranting--don't want to rave!!

It is as certain as the continued crash of the lovely surf on Navarre Beach.

My boyfriend is a financial advisor and has almost all of his clients in safe positions. It truly is a roll of the dice now...

It is no different than a household spending more than they take in and then maxing out on every credit card.....at a point, the dock is going to collapse. That is one way for him to gain even more control and if I did not know better myself, I would say that Saul Alinsky probably alluded to such things in his book of evil that the demon follows as his "bible."

If anyone in this country does not believe for a millisecond that we could drop into an abyss such as another Greater Depression....they are simply stupid, foolish people. America especially with the last two generations have never known poverty and depression and it is oblivious to their thinking.

Remember folks, we are not dealing with simply an idiot like Jimmy Carter. We are dealing with an out of touch, narcissistic, hellbent, maniac who has direct communist/socialist/anarchist's ties and who said specifically....."we will fundamentally transform America." We are dealing with a cornered, caged animal that has 3.9 years to complete his goal. He is not just going to ride off in the sunset and allow the next liberal President to take over. He wants full and total control. I see it plain as the print on this page and so do millions of others. Sadly, more than that, do not and it is because of them, this country will suffer unlike it has ever seen in our history. Keep believing that everything will just work out and see what ya get!!!
